Teekay Vancouver Hosts Students for #KidsToWork Day
November 5, 2015
Take Our Kids to Work Day!
On Wednesday, November 5, the Teekay Vancouver office participated in Take Our Kids to Work, an annual program run by The Learning Partnership. This program encourages Grade 9 students across Canada to think about their career development by giving them a glimpse of the work world.
Teekay has been participating in Take Our Kids to Work since 2011. This program is a great opportunity for Teekay employees to show their children, relatives, and family friends how their work contributes to achieving Teekay’s vision and the excitement of working in the corporate head office of a global organization. It’s also a rewarding experience for the Teekay volunteers who take part in the day to share their knowledge and advice with the upcoming generation entering the workforce over the next few years.
This year we hosted nine students from across the Lower Mainland and engaged 11 volunteers across multiple departments in the Vancouver office. The morning consisted of a number of interactive sessions including a healthy and safety tour, a Strengthsfinder activity to help students discover their strengths, and a career advice panel where the students had the opportunity to ask our recent graduates questions about post-secondary education and landing the first job. After lunch, the students spend the afternoon job shadowing with parents and attending the Teekay Career Fair – half hour information sessions with employees working in the areas of: Information Systems, Marketing and Communications, Legal, Engineering, Accounting, and Human Resources.
At the end of the day, the students learned more about career opportunities in a corporate work environment and formed new friendships. It was a fun experience for all the Teekay parents and volunteers involved as well. We look forward to hosting the program again in November of next year!
