Yakov Gakkel, the last of six Arc7 LNG Carrier newbuildings has been delivered, marking the end of our Yamal delivery program!
Back in 2014, we announced a new contract for six LNG carriers to be built in partnership with our joint venture partner, China LNG Shipping (CLNG), for the Yamal LNG Project in Northern Russia. Five years later, we are thrilled to have delivered the last of those six vessels into service.
All of our Arc7 vessels are named after explorers and scientists who have made significant contributions in the Arctic region. Our last Arc7 newbuilding carrier Yakov Gakkel is no different – it carries the namesake of the Russian oceanographer who participated in numerous Arctic expeditions in his study of the Arctic basin.
Learn more about its sister vessels and their stories:
This has been a long journey full of many ‘first.” One of the many ‘firsts’ was the development of our Polar Water Operating Manual and Arctic Survival guide, which continues to be highly coveted by the Arctic community. The Eduard Toll later made history as the first shipping vessel to make independent passage across the Northern Sea Route without the support of an ice breaker during the winter months!
As the Arc7 newbuilding program comes to an end, we would like to take the time to acknowledge and thank everyone who has made this journey possible: from our onshore teams, to the teams onboard, to our partners and suppliers involved in this project.
Our onboard teams are some of the industry’s most highly trained officers and they continue to exemplify Teekay’s Operational Excellence every single day. With all six newbuildings out on the water, we wish all the vessels and their crews safe journeys and following seas!
