“Practice Safety Everyday, Safety Has no Holiday”
As part of our ongoing Operational Leadership journey, we have implemented the Operational Leadership (OL) Award. This award is designed to recognize and reward people whose positive environmental, safety and leadership behaviors exemplify those expected of Operational Leaders.
Individuals nominate a colleague who is continuously taking proactive actions to improve the safety and environmental culture across the fleet. All the nomination were extremely strong and outstanding, highlighting the safety champions they are. Here are some great examples of this quarter’s nominees:
Bosun Mr. Roland Miclat – Donegal Spirit
Capt. Giuseppe Castellano along with his staff proudly nominated Mr. Roland for his safety and leadership qualities. This is how his team describes him:
“Mr. Roland is a true leader of men and leads his team by example. He always provides excellent ideas and safety suggestions on how to complete a job safely and efficiently during the ship’s Daily Work Planning meetings. He is proactive and actively participates in various safety campaigns onboard and reports quality TSOPs (Teekay Safety Observation Process) and hazards. He has displayed outstanding understanding of our safety culture and always considers personal safety as well as safety of his colleagues as a top priority.
He follows the six Operational Leadership Safety Commitments in letter and Spirit. He was already nominated for the Quarterly Team Operational leader on his previous tour of duty. So it’s a strong desire of our vessel staff that he wins this prestigious award and set an example not only for our team but for the rest of the fleet.”
ETO Emil George Constantin – Axel Spirit
“Emil Constantin is a very proactive member onboard who treats safety of himself and his fellow colleagues as top priority. Wearing and using correct PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for all type of jobs has been observed in his tour of duty. He has stopped unsafe acts in the engine room and on deck. Over and above, he shares his experience with the crew member while stopping unsafe act.
For example, he observed a crew member using a hand grinder for a job on the pipe. The person performing the cutting job was using all required PPE, however eye protection used was not of correct type for the particular job. He immediately stopped the crew member and made him aware regarding use of correct type of PPE.
Apart from his daily work schedule, he actively participates in safety rounds along with Safety Officers and the Senior Officers. A self-starter, he comes up with ideas during drills and subsequent debriefs.”
AB John Mahusay Sipat – Pinnacle Spirit
“John has displayed a very high level of safety consciousness onboard. He is not afraid to correct his seniors and possesses the Spirit of an Operational Leadership! He has on more than one occasion brought up significant safety issues onboard the ship.
For example, while carrying out ship-to-ship operations in USA, AB John while on deck watch noticed that one of the surveyors was on deck without safety shoes or a helmet. He immediately offered the surveyor a helmet placed at the gangway and requested him to change his footwear.
He is also proving to be a good mentor to the other crew members onboard and his suggestions during HSEQ meetings has been very positive.”
Winner winner… The Safety Champion is AB Reunir, Cary Tabal onboard Garibaldi Spirit!
Cary received 14 nominations from Team Aquila vessels making him the Q1 2016 Teekay Operational Leadership Award Winner! He lives with his motto: “Practice safety every day, Safety has no holiday.” He starts his day and wishes everyone “SAFETY FIRST” instead of the usual “Good morning.” He is strictly committed to Teekay six commitments and always helps new Teekay employees by providing them proper guidance and training for the jobs. To enhance the safety culture on board he is actively involved in Toolbox talk, Take 5, hazards reporting and proper TSOP reporting.
Cary always bear in mind that safety is not a shirt that can be slipped whenever you desire and discarded when you don’t because sooner or later you will fail and possibly the results may be catastrophic. In fact you may not even get another chance!
