The Names of the Vessels would be After Locations in the Broome Region
Teekay Australia‘s joint venture with KOTUG, KT Maritime, recently launched a vessel naming competition for the three Shell Prelude Infield Support Vessels (ISVs) with Broome Senior High School and Saint Mary’s College in Broome. The competition allowed interested students to suggest three vessel names relevant to astronomy, marine life and or nautical themes, with the major prize being a Macbook Pro. The competition was a great success with 33 forms collected, and 89 suggested vessel names to choose from. KT Maritime’s board voted in favor of selecting a common theme, and based on the results of the competition voting, concluded that the names of the vessels would be after locations in the Broome region. Therefore the selected names are “RT Beagle Bay”, “RT Roebuck Bay” and “RT Kuri Bay”. The board noted that the ISVs will in fact pass each bay when arriving and departing the Port of Broome, and given KT Maritime long term presence in the region, it was concluded that it would be a great gesture to pay homage to the beautiful Broome coastline. For those curious about the “RT” prefix, it simply stands for RotorTug, a reference to the design of the ISVs. Last month at a Shell organised career event at Broome Civic Centre, known as “speed careering”, KT Maritime announced the results of the competition and revealed that Helena Hungerford-Morgan from Saint Mary’s College had in fact selected all three winning entries. Since it was KT Maritime’s expectation to be awarding three prizes to three separate winners, the prize pool was extended to the fourth and fifth placed entrants, Edden Bibby from Broome Senior High School and Sabita Latchman from Saint Mary’s College. Congratulations Helena, Edden and Sabita!

KT Maritime’s Three ISVs will Now be the First Vessels to Register Broome as their Home Port
KT Maritime has successfully obtained approval from AMSA for Broome, Western Australia to be a home port for the purposes of shipping registration. KT Maritime’s three ISVs, RT Beagle Bay, RT Kuri Bay and RT Roebuck Bay will now be the first vessels to register Broome as their home port. To achieve home port status for Broome, KT Maritime was required to submit an application outlining the considerable historical, economic and cultural links of Broome to the maritime and shipping industry. We were able to do so since Broome was founded over 100 years ago on the back of the pearling industry and the port now has ships calling in for a variety of purposes. With oil and gas support in the region working in and out of the port in earnest it was also possible to demonstrate a strong future in shipping for the port. Broome will be the home for the ISVs and its crew for up to 15 years and it is believed it will set a home port precedent for similar vessels in the offshore industry in the future. This is great news for the Port of Broome and for Western Australia, with the number of home ports in Western Australia now increased to four, along with Dampier, Fremantle and Port Hedland.
