On Saturday, July 11 2015, Teekay teams from our London, Stavanger and Glasgow offices (and guests) took part in the annual Seafarers UK Challenge which saw them climb 24 peaks in under 24 hours.
The UK 24 Peaks challenge course is a 50 mile long trek which includes Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England. Over the course of two days, three Teekay teams took in some stunning countryside views, and some pretty harsh weather conditions. Overall, 13 teams marched on through sideways rain, strong winds, muddy paths, cold weather and cloudy peaks. The overcast weather also caused some navigation issues for climbers who had to refine their map and compass skills real-time.
Together, the hikers raised £50,000 for theSeafarers UK Charityof which the Teekay Team raised £17,000. The charity aims to provide funding and support to seafarers in need and their families. At Teekay, we are proud to have skilled seafarers who do what it takes to bring energy to the world. These front-line workers are at the core of who we are as a company and ensuring their well-being is important to us. Consequently, the Teekay teams kept going!
The Teekay teams took home the Inaugural Seafarers UK ‘Ambassador Award which underlined their valiant efforts for getting so many participants involved. Teekay also took home the first place award for the fastest team as team Colin, Geoff, Jan, Paul, and Anne completed the challenge in an astounding 19 hours and 12 minutes. This marks a new record time for Teekay by over 30 minutes.
The three other Teekay teams rang in some respectable times with team Ozlem, Jurgis, Tim, Lilian, Hyun, David and Mark finishing in 25 hours and 39 minutes, as well as team Chris, Varun, Rahul, Ben, Jos, Mark and Ellie in 25 hours and 20 minutes. Last but never the least, team Glasgow, consisting of Dilys Lim, Michael McNaul, Euan Greer, Nicola Lunney, Manish Chandra and Jackie Fowler, came in at an honorable 26 hours and 27 minutes. Unfortunately, team Glasgow had to head up the road back to Scotland and missed the team photo.
At the finish line, albeit bruised up and exhausted, the hikers rang in a successful team-building event with pride. We look forward to seeing them compete next year!
