“Let’s continue to work TOGETHER and prevent any harm to our people and environment.”
Our heartiest congratulations to Mr. Ocampo Dante Postrano, the proud winner of the Teekay Operational Leadership Award for Q1 – 2017. Ocampo is currently on vacation after a well served tour of duty in the rank of Bosun onboard Iskmati Spirit. Amongst various nominations received from across the fleet, his journey of delivering Operational Leadership is well supported by his contribution to a robust safety culture as stated by his team onboard:After completing almost 25 years of safe service in the Teekay family, he follows the Six Safety commitments at all times and ensures that the juniors and other team mates abide by them as well. A great mentor for his juniors and colleagues, he sets up an example for all onboard by his words and actions.
He has shown good awareness in identifying hazards and a great responsibility in reporting them for appropriate closing action and avoiding recurrence. There have been many instances onboard the vessel when he has stopped an unsafe act irrespective of the person’s rank. This clearly shows that his sincerity is not only towards personal safety but also for his fellow seafarers helping them reach back to their loved ones safe and sound.
Ocampo utilizes the risk tools well by active participation in Risk Assessment and Toolbox Talk discussions, Take 5 prior the job is undertaken or always presenting himself in proper PPE.
These are some of the examples of his commitment and proactive role to promote a safety culture onboard:
- Ropes used as lifeline at Gangway were in poor condition. Same were replaced with approved type to work over side.
- Corroded stay wires for Mast Riser and Main Mast were renewed safely in compliance with proper procedures. Pinch points were marked with Tiger strips and to enhance the message a “CAUTION NOTICE” was also posted by him.
- Acting as the senior mentor, he demonstrates safe working practises such as Trailing Hand Technique, etc. during drills, training sessions and during routine work to all team mates especially the juniors and new joiners.
- He stopped an Unsafe Act of improper wire rope handling techniques by one of crew members while greasing mooring winches.
