Teekay Gas joins dozens of organizations across the UK shipping industry in signing Maritime UK’s ‘Mental Health in Maritime Pledge, an initiative to ensure employee mental health and wellbeing is considered at the highest level across the maritime sector.
By signing the Pledge, Teekay commits to building a culture that actively supports the wellbeing of all our employees at all levels, throughout our organization and industry.
The Mental Health in Maritime Pledge calls upon executives from maritime organizations to make a public commitment that includes:
- Recognizing executives as leading advocates for mental health and wellbeing
- Empowering and improving mental health issues
- Dispelling stigmas of mental health issues
- Providing wellbeing provision through action and support
Chris McDade, Vice President of Gas Operations, who signed the Pledge on behalf of Teekay Gas, provided his reflection on what the initiative this Pledge means to our organization:
“The unprecedented circumstances of the last year has put an enormous strain on the Mental Health and Wellbeing of our colleagues, both ashore and at sea. But we should also remember that working remotely at sea, in a complex, highly regulated and commercially focused environment has seen the maritime industry suffering some of the highest rates of mental ill-health in the world. We need to do something about that.
At Teekay Gas, I’m proud to say we have a highly motivated team of people who are passionate about raising awareness of mental health, who have openly spoken about their own struggles, and actively seek to support others in maintaining a positive mental balance. We continue to put initiatives in place to support our colleagues and signing the ‘Mental Health in Maritime’ Pledge is another way to demonstrate our commitment. The Pledge will hopefully encourage the industry at large to recognize the importance of removing the stigma of mental health and understanding the important role we all have to play.”
As part of the Pledge, we recognize that we have a shared responsibility to recognize, advocate and foster a positive mental health state, at all levels, throughout our organization, UK maritime sector, and broader maritime community.
