Happy World Maritime Day!
In commemoration of World Maritime Day, we are rallying around the IMO’s World Maritime Day Theme, “Seafarers: at the core of shipping’s future.” The 2021 theme seeks to increase the visibility of seafarers by drawing attention to the invaluable role they play now and will continue to play in the future.
The focus on seafarers comes as the COVID-19 pandemic has placed extraordinary demands on seafarers, including restricted port access, difficulty re-suppling vessels, and most concerning of all, challenges in completing crew changes and repatriations. This crew change crisis, which has been ongoing for nearly a year, is a humanitarian emergency that threatens the safety of shipping (read more here).
Our seafaring colleagues demonstrate the dedication, resilience, and professionalism that are a testament to their entire profession. With true #TeekaySpirit, our seafarers have continued to raise the bar for operational excellence and safety at sea – even during a global pandemic. In honor of World Maritime day, we want to take the opportunity to acknowledge their hard work and resilience.
Read on for a small sample of what our sea colleagues have accomplished in 2021.
In 2021, Teekay seafarers upheld safety commitments at sea.
Our sea staff sets the industry standard in safe ship operation, and 2021 has been no exception. In Q1, Q2 and Q3 of 2021 alone, 50 vessels in our global fleet celebrated LTI-Free Milestones.
They rose above the call of duty to help those in need.
Our seafaring colleagues’ commitment to safety doesn’t end with our vessels and our crew. In 2021, we saw the Emerald Spirit rescue four sailors in distress near Ecuador, the Torben Spirit rescue a solo sailor near Bermuda, the Aspen Spirit rescue two near the Straits of Gibraltar, seafarers on the ADV Ocean Protector assist a cargo ship at Christmas Island, and the Lobito care for and find homes for a cat and her litter of kittens.
And they did it all with #TeekaySpirit.
Last, but not least, our sea staff continue to accomplish incredible things while keeping the #TeekaySpirit alive.
